Reflections of the 2024 AWS Summit in Madrid

This year Amazon Web Services (AWS) Summit was held again in Madrid, an event that brings together technology experts and developers to present the latest news and tools from the AWS cloud industry.

As we have been doing for the past 6 years, TradeHeader was present to be aware and gather ideas about tools that can be useful both in internal development and solutions for our clients. The event occupied two pavilions at IFEMA, enjoying its highest attendance ever.

This year the main novelty and main protagonist was Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), accompanied by Amazon's product Bedrock. It is notable that AWS is committed to this type of technology for the future, and proof of this were the numerous talks by experts and companies explaining various implementations and solutions based on Bedrock and Amazon's Gen AI services and how they have been integrating it into their workflow.

Our experience

At 9am the Keynote Session started with Suzana Curic, AWS Iberia Country Manager, who presented what was going to be the focus of all the topics: Gen AI.

After the Keynote Session, we took a walk around the pavilion, as it was huge, and we could see the different stands of the sponsoring companies such as Red Hat, NTT Data, Capgemini, MongoDB, among others. Apart from these stands, we could also see a drone that scanned QR codes.

We could even see a human-machine interaction application, in which, by means of sensors, a robot arm imitated the behavior of a boy's arm and played Jenga and greeted the people around it.

At approximately noon, the presentations started. We attended an introductory session on Gen AI, which was great to get some context for what was to come in the upcoming presentations. They also presented some tools such as Amazon Q, a support tool to streamline and accelerate software development, and PartyRock, a web tool powered by Amazon Bedrock that works as a playground to test and get started with Generative AI.

Then we went to the IBM session: Accelerating web application development with GenAI, where they presented how generative AI could help a developer in the analysis, development, testing, and documentation phases, which we found very interesting.

We also attended the OutSystems’ session about how they integrated generative AI, specifically Amazon Bedrock, into their services. We were captivated by the use case presented by the Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. They implemented generative AI to extract a list of symptoms from a clinical note, enabling them to diagnose rare diseases in children.

One of the most valuable talks for front-end development was the AWS Amplify session. It introduced AWS Amplify Gen2, an enhanced version of AWS Amplify, offering a full-stack environment, faster deployment, among other benefits.

One talk we found interesting was on prompt engineering best practices, or how to interact and communicate correctly with AI models and Gen AI to get the expected result. The most important thing to keep in mind is always to give context: if you ask the model to solve a problem, specify the type of problem, but also what role it is going to play, as well as the type of audience to address, tone, etc. Thus, it is not the same to ask an expert in this field to explain the latest advances in software and the main technological challenges as it is to ask a 7-year-old child, for example.

Amazon Q was a tool that left us astonished. It’s a generative AI that helps the developer to identify best practices, write code, troubleshoot, maintenance tasks, and documentation. It’s also useful to migrate projects from Java 8 to Java 17.
Overall, it was a highly enriching experience in terms of knowledge. For future editions of AWS, we hope there will be a greater diversity of technologies in the conference topics and more information about the talks available in the agenda. Discovering new technologies and new ways to implement them it's always an exciting opportunity.
